"Breaking the Silence: Caroline Wozniacki Opens Up About Her Health Struggles"
Perhaps the two top stories of the US Open so far are Caroline Wozniacki’s comeback after three years away and a mystery illness that has struck several players in the field. The Danish ace’s remarkable return continued on Wednesday with a straight-sets victory over 11-seed Petra Kvitova, booking a third-round clash at Arthur Ashe Stadium with America’s Jennifer Brady on Friday
The 33-year-old, who was ranked No. 1 in the world in her prime and won the Australian Open in 2018, retired in 2020 and had two children before announcing in June this year that she would return to elite tennis. After taking part in the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Masters, she has impressed on the court at Flushing Meadows this week and she has avoided the illness that has affected several fellow competitors.
Ons Jabeur, Chris Eubanks, Dominic Thiem and Hubert Hurkacz are among the players to have played while feeling ill this week, with Jabeur saying she was feeling like a “zombie” in her grueling win over Linda Noskova on Thursday.
Wozniacki, though, has been more fortunate and she is taking measures to ensure her comeback is not derailed by the illness. “I haven’t been spending much time on site,” she said in her press conference ahead of the third round. ”I come to practice and play my matches. I try to hydrate and stay healthy. I feel pretty good. I usually stay away from people that look sick anyways, but I haven’t seen many people in the locker room not feeling well. Hopefully, people stay healthy.”
